Uxo

Capital town of the parish of the same name, in the council of Mieres. It is located in an important communications hub, where several mountain routes converge, coming from the ports of San Isidro, Vegarada, La Carisa and Payares, currently also running through Uxo railways and a highway.

Uxo is located at an altitude of 200 meters, with about 2,300 inhabitants.

The existence in Ujo of a pilgrim hospital is documented in the 15th century, located next to a bridge and that would have been founded by Gonzalo Rodríguez Picón. This hospital was already inactive in the middle of the 18th century, not being mentioned in the Ensenada Cadastre. The enlightened Jovellanos, at the end of that century, does allude to the fact that a stream called the Alberguería existed in Ujo, a possible toponymic reminiscence of a pilgrim assistance institution of which no remainder has survived to this day.
