Museo del Ferrocarril

The Asturias Railway Museum is located in the old North Gijón/Xixón station, head of the line that since 1974 linked Gijón/Xixón with La Pola de Lena.

The building was built in the years immediately prior to the entry into operation of that railway connection, responding to a project by Melitón Martín, configuring itself as a building with a ground floor and main floor, rectangular in shape and alternating on the outside of limestone ashlar and loaded walls.

On the occasion of its conversion into a museum, a modern building was built in parallel, on the other side of the tracks, practically neutral and disorganized, to house exhibition rooms and premises of the institution.

This museum preserves a very outstanding collection of rolling stock, one of the most outstanding in Spain, hosting an interesting permanent exhibition on the history of the different railway lines that crossed Asturias since the mid-19th century.
